HISTORY OF THE FRIENDS

The Friends of the Jackson County Main Library (FOJCML) was incorporated in 1997, however it had been operating on an informal basis since before 1976.

A small group of Jackson County citizens saw the need to help the new library, built in 1970, and began their work by volunteering at the library and by selling the library’s discarded books at infrequently held book sales. By 1980 the Friends organization was more formally organized and was providing funds to purchase much needed items for the library.

In 1986 Jackson County purchased the Hooper House, an historic Victorian house on Main Street in Sylva, with the intent of tearing it down to expand the library. From the time of its purchase the Hooper House was used as the “Library Annex.”

Now the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and other businesses occupy the Hooper House and the Library has embarked on a fundraising campaign for a new library complex utilizing the historic Jackson County Courthouse.

The Friends are active supporters of the community hosting special events at the bookstore. Seen here Pic and Play Dulcimer group at Friday Night Live in Downtown Sylva.

"CONTRIBUTING, ENCOURAGING, ENRICHING"

From that small group of individuals in the 1970s holding books sales and volunteering at the library, the Friends has grown to thriving, strong group of dedicated volunteers working to promote literacy and reading through support for the public library in Jackson County.

The Friends main source of revenue is generated by sales from the Friends Used Book Store in downtown Sylva and membership fees. Over the years, the Friends have purchased many items, including:

• An outdoor book drop

• New computer equipment

• Educational software, reference materials
  books, CDs, DVDs

• Seating and media shelving

• Speakers and programming

The Friends is the designated fiscal agent for the New Jackson County Public Library Complex Fundraising Campaign. So far, funds have come primarily from contributions from the Friends, profits from three book fairs, a grant from a private foundation, several gifts from individuals and monies collected in donation jars at the book store and the library.

The Friends have developed an extensive database to capture and report all campaign related information. In addition, the Friends have committed to pay the expenses related to a part time campaign administrator and all other campaign related expenses, to the extent possible. The Friends also were able to obtain a private donor to underwrite up to $50,000 of the costs associated with a professional fundraising consultant.
